Do I need a logo as a sole trader?

Short answer: no, not legally. Longer answer: it depends on what kind of work you want next.

The Mils business cards

Nobody’s going to fine you for not having a logo. Plenty of sole traders run decent businesses on word of mouth with nothing but a name and a phone number.

If you’re fully booked and happy with the work coming in, you can stop reading here and go and have your tea. If not, read on.

When you can get away without one

  • You’re booked up months ahead through word of mouth.
  • Most of your work is subbing for other firms, so it’s their brand on the job, not yours.
  • You’re still working out whether self-employed is for you.

When it starts costing you

  • When you’re about to get the van done. You’re paying for the wrap either way. Putting a rushed logo on it is an expensive way to advertise a rushed logo. (Here’s what to put on your van.)
  • When customers find you online first. Most people look you up before they ring: your Facebook page, your Google profile, maybe a website. If it looks thrown together, they’ll assume the work is too.
  • When you’re quoting against bigger firms. If the prices are close, people pick whoever looks safest.
  • When you want to put your prices up. It’s much easier to charge like an established firm when you look like one.

What a logo actually needs to do

Forget clever. A logo for a trade has three jobs:

  • Read clearly small, on a business card or a Facebook profile picture, and big, on the side of a van.
  • Work in one colour, for embroidered workwear, stamps and site boards.
  • Be yours alone.

That last one matters more than people think. Free logo makers and AI generators hand the same handful of ideas to everyone. You won’t notice until you park next to someone with yours.

The cheap options, honestly

  • Do it yourself. Your business name in a strong, simple typeface and one colour is better than a bad logo. Honestly. Pick it and use it the same way everywhere.
  • A mate who’s good on computers. Fine, as long as you get proper files at the end (vector files, if you want the jargon). Otherwise your sign shop will charge you to redraw it.
  • A template or AI logo. Cheap and quick, and shared with everyone else who clicked the same button.
  • A designer. Costs more, built around you, and you own every file.

If you want it done properly

That’s what our Starter for Ten is for: two logo concepts, your colours and fonts, a one-page guide and your social images, done in 48 hours. It’s £995 + VAT, or 6 × £166 if you’d rather spread it.

It’s built for people who’ve just gone it alone and don’t want to look like it. Have a look at Brendan at BM Plumbing + Heating, who went self-employed and looked established from day one.
